East Valley Tribune | Daily Arizona news for Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Mesa, Scottsdale Thomas Newby and his neighbors awoke early last week to discover that the dirt road in front of their homes was about a foot lower than it had been the day before. Heavy tire tracks revealed that, sometime during the night, an earthmover had excavated a layer of road on South 196th Street between San Tan Boulevard and Empire Road stretching about a half-mile. Newby, who lives in the unincorporated area of Maricopa County near Queen Creek, can’t prove who stole the dirt, or why, but he wants it back.
