State championships moving to Glendale
State championships moving to Glendale: "State high school championship competitions in boys and girls basketball, wrestling and spirit line will be shifted westward starting in February.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association took the advice of John Babsone Lane Soule and went west with its championship events, agreeing to a five-year deal to stage the competitions at Glendale Arena.
...Dubbed the February Frenzy, championship events will be staged over a 12-day period in 2005.
The events will be begin with the spirit line competition on Feb. 4 and continue with wrestling championships Feb. 5-12. The championship extravaganza will conclude with the Class 5A basketball title tilts in early March.
The basketball and spirit championships will be moving from America West Arena and wresting is shifting from Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
“AWA has been great for us, but we had to piece our basketball schedule around the Suns, hockey [in the past] and concerts,” said Barry Sollenberger, AIA media relations director. “Last year we had the Class 5A semifinals bumped at the last minute for a Britney Spears concert."
